And it will be our home for the next 18 months. But we are now on the downhill stretch of this assignment. And looking back, I don't even know where the past year and a half has gone.
It's funny, because when we first got here someone told me it would take about a year to get used to it here. At first I thought that was strange, but now, it's true. I think I have finally gotten used to life down here. It's still very different than anywhere I've ever been and I'm pretty sure island life was not meant for me. But, I've adjusted to it and life is good.
We've done some unique and fun things while we've been here, like a trip to the Southernmost point of the continental US.
We've also seen some unique and fun things too. I mean, where else could you see a full grown man walking around in an apron, chefs hat, and meat between his buns?
Key West is my first real assignment with Zach. I was already living in San Antonio when Zach and I met, so to me there was no real adjustment. When we got married, I knew that being the spouse of a military member was going to bring relocation, but I never actively thought about what that meant. It meant being away from family and things that we were used to. Both we things I've never done before. The farthest I've ever been away from my family was less than 400 miles. Now we are 1542 miles away. It was really hard at first, but we have a great support system (here and back on the mainland).
I know that Zach and I are both excited about a new assignment. It's a new place with new possibilities. Of course, we are still a year away from knowing where we will go next and another 6 months after that before moving. So we are just going to enjoy the last 18 months of island living before moving on.
